Shopify vs WooCommerce for vape, in one table
The comparison that matters is structural — who can shut you down. Full breakdown of every platform in the alternatives guide.
| Shopify (after Jul 7) | WooCommerce (self-hosted) | |
|---|---|---|
| Vape / THC / CBD vapes | Prohibited — ENDS ban | Allowed — your ToS |

| Who owns the software | Shopify | You (open-source) |
| Category eviction risk | Proven — Jun 23, 2026 | Structurally impossible |

“Got the Shopify notice on a Wednesday, was live on WooCommerce by Saturday morning. Every order, every customer, every redirect. Our organic rankings didn't move an inch.”
“I assumed a migration meant weeks of downtime and lost SEO. They ran both stores in parallel, flipped DNS at 3 AM, and Monday revenue was actually up 6%.”
“Nine years on Shopify. Nine years of customers and subscription data. All of it landed in Woo intact, with the loyalty points still attached.”
“Our biggest fear was the redirect map — 2,100 URLs. They shipped a full 301 matrix, fixed Shopify's weird /collections paths, and Search Console stayed green.”
“Amanita products get banned everywhere. They rebuilt our age verification and lab-results pages on Woo better than we had them, and hooked up a processor that actually understands the category.”
“Wholesale pricing tiers were the hard part — took an extra half-day past the 48 hours, which they flagged upfront on the call. Everything else was flawless.”
Who's behind this
ShopifyVapeBan is run by CBD LOCAL
The agency behind SEO, analytics and platform migrations for regulated e-commerce — vape, hemp and CBD brands. The 48-hour pipeline on this site is the same one we run for our retained clients; the ban just made it urgent for everyone else.
The questions everyone asks first
When exactly does the Shopify vape ban take effect?
Merchant notices reviewed by compliance firms instruct sellers to remove all ENDS products by July 7, 2026 UTC or submit a successful appeal. Reuters first reported the platform-wide ban on June 23, 2026. Stores that keep affected listings past the deadline risk product delisting and account suspension.
What products count as ENDS under Shopify's policy?
Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems as Shopify defines them: e-cigarettes, e-liquids, vaporizers, parts, and refills — regardless of nicotine content. In practice that sweeps in nicotine vapes, zero-nicotine vapes, THC/THCA/Delta-8 carts, CBD vapes, mushroom vape blends, empty cartridges, pods, 510 batteries, mods, coils and chargers.
My products are FDA-authorized. Am I exempt?
No. Sources familiar with the policy told Reuters the ban applies to all vapes regardless of regulatory status — including the roughly 45 FDA-authorized e-cigarette products. There is no compliant-product carve-out.
Can I just appeal instead of migrating?
The notice offers an appeal path, but the ban is a category-level policy adopted after a year of pressure from 25 state attorneys general and the City of New York. Appeals that argue an individual store is compliant are fighting the wrong battle — the category itself is prohibited. Treat an appeal as a way to buy days, not a survival strategy.
